The kitchen clock ticked louder than it should. Steam curled from the shepherd's pie Caroline had slapped onto the table ten minutes ago.

Benjamin

The single word hung in the air like a command. Reece was already shovelling food into his mouth, eyes fixed on James across the table.

Reece

sets down his fork You’ve been really quiet today, James. What’s wrong with you?

James

shifts uncomfortably in his chair Tired.

The lie sat thin between them. James didn’t meet anyone’s eyes. His fingers gripped his fork too tightly.

Caroline

not looking up from her plate You should get to bed early then. Got work tomorrow.

Benjamin

He’s got nothing tomorrow. He quit the garage.

Silence. Reece’s fork paused halfway to his mouth. His eyes narrowed.
