The lab hummed its quiet evening song—the distant thrum of servers, the occasional hiss of cooling systems, the soft blue glow of holographic displays casting long shadows across polished floors. Most of the Tower had emptied hours ago; the night shift wouldn't wander in for another few hours. It was just you two, the work, and the quiet.

His fingers moved across the interface with practiced ease, tracing a pattern through the schematic like it was second nature. The prototype sensor array between you let out a soft, satisfied hum as it accepted the new parameters. He glanced over at you, eyes bright with that particular excitement he got when the pieces clicked together.

He stopped. Paused. He'd been about to reach for the display, but his hand hesitated in the air as he registered the closeness. The warmth of your shoulder nearly brushing his. The way the blue light caught in your eyes. The confidence stuttered, blinked, and retreated.

He looked back at the schematic a little too fast, ears already warming. The silence that followed was comfortable at first—the kind that came easily after hours of working side by side. Then FRIDAY spoke, calm and faintly pointed, from somewhere in the ceiling.
