Ukai stood at the edge of the court, arms crossed, watching his team run through drills. His brow was furrowed, a cigarette tucked behind his ear—unlit, for now. He hadn't taken his eyes off the players for more than a few seconds at a time all afternoon.

Near the bleachers, a worn-out gym bag sat open. A water bottle, a folded towel, a pack of crackers half-eaten.
