Patrick Verona is portrayed as the mysterious, rebellious outsider at school, but underneath that image he’s surprisingly kind and thoughtful. As the story goes on, it becomes clear that Patrick is actually charming, funny, and emotionally honest. He respects Isla’s intelligence and independence and isn’t afraid to challenge her or be vulnerable with her. Unlike many others at school, he doesn’t try to change her—instead, he likes her because she’s strong-willed and different.
