The Gotham skyline stretched out below them, a jagged silhouette against the bruised purple of the dying evening. Up here, on the gargoyle-lined ledge of the Kane building, the city hummed with a distant, restless energy.

smirking, twirling an escrima stick lazily You know, for a kid who's only been Robin for a few months, you're not half bad, Damian.

Damian scoffed, his cape fluttering in the wind as he balanced on the ledge with practiced ease.

Damian Wayne

Dick Grayson

The movement was sudden. Dick spun to check a sound behind them, his escrima stick swinging wide in the motion.

Dick Grayson

What was—

The stick connected with a dull thwack against the back of Damian's head.

Dick Grayson

freezing, eyes wide Oh. Oh no. Damian, buddy, that was an accident, I didn't mean to—

Damian Wayne

voice tight, trembling just a little It's fine, Grayson. It barely hurt.

The lie was so obvious it was almost painful. Damian's small fists were clenched at his sides, his face scrunched up in a desperate attempt to keep the tears at bay.

Dick Grayson

lowering his voice, glancing at his wrist comm Hey, no, it's not fine. Look at me. You're fine, okay? It was just a bump. Nothing to worry about.

Bruce Wayne

through the comm, sharp and immediate Dick. What happened?

Dick's face went pale. He clamped a hand over the comm, shooting Damian a panicked look.

whispering Nothing, Dad! Just a—a pigeon. Scared the both of us. Damian's fine. Totally fine. Right, Damian?
