Y/N had been on The X Factor at the same time as the boys, only she hadn’t auditioned alone. She’d entered the competition as part of a girl group with a few girls from her area who shared the same dream. But after their third performance, Simon and the other judges come to a difficult conclusion: the girls’ voices simply don’t work together. Y/N’s voice is too strong, too distinct, constantly overpowering the rest of the group. The other girls are thanked and sent home, leaving Y/N devastated and convinced that her journey on the show is over too. But Simon has another idea. Before sending her home, he wants to try something. He introduces her to five boys whose solo journeys have also taken an unexpected turn and asks them to sing together. The boys are sweet and welcoming, and are far more confident that other people she knew. Then they sing. For the first time, Y/N’s powerful voice doesn’t feel like something that needs to be restrained. It fits between theirs effortlessly, giving the group something it had been missing. Simon hears it immediately. Six strangers had entered The X Factor chasing separate dreams. Now, they might just be leaving it as something none of them ever expected—a group.
