The cold bit through Caroline's jeans like needles, each gust of wind carrying the stench of things she couldn't name. Beyond the torchlight, shadows moved—but they weren't the lazy drift of tree branches in a breeze. These shadows walked. Stalked. And somewhere, impossibly close, she heard the low, wet sound of something being dragged across cobblestones.

a voice, low and amused, from somewhere behind her You're not from the village.

Caroline froze. The voice was calm, almost gentle—which was somehow worse than the screaming had been. She could hear the smile in it.

The village women scream when they see these woods. They beg, mostly. Sometimes they run. a pause You just sit there. Staring at my castle like it's a puzzle you're trying to solve.

Footsteps. Slow. Deliberate. Crunching through dead leaves. A figure stepped into the torchlight, and Caroline's breath caught in her throat.
