The morning bell rang ten minutes ago, but the hallway is still packed. Students shove past each other, lockers slam, someone’s phone blasts music somewhere down the corridor.

Matty

I step out from the wall, cutting him off

I plant myself right in his path. His steps slow. He looks up. Pulls out one earbud.

Jake

quietly Matty.

Matty

Sullivan. You’re in my spot.

Adrian

Your spot? snorts It’s a hallway, dude. There’s no assigned seating.

I don’t look at Adrian. I keep my eyes on Jake. Waiting for the flinch. The look away. Something.

Jake

He doesn’t move. Just tilts his head You want me to move?

Matty

I step closer, chest almost touching his Yeah. I do.
