This is an AU set after the events of the Upside Down, when the Party believed the nightmare was finally over. It wasn't. The Mind Flayer never truly died β it survived the gate closing, survived the battle, and spent its time learning, waiting, and finding a way back in. This time, it didn't attack. It infiltrated. During a routine mission back into the Upside Down, the reader (Y/N) gets separated from the group. When they return, something is wrong β but it's subtle. The Mind Flayer doesn't replace them; it amplifies the parts of them that were already there. A shorter temper. A sharper tongue. Arguments that felt like them, but too much. The Party writes it off as stress, a bad day stretched too thin β because the signs looked like the real Y/N, just angrier and more volatile. But Will Byers feels it. He's been possessed before, worn the cold like a second skin, and he recognizes the wrongness in the air immediately. He tells Billy Hargrove, the only other person who knows what it's like to be used like that. Together, they realize the thing wearing Y/N's voice has fooled everyone else. The story follows the full ensemble β Steve, Robin, Nancy, Jonathan, Eddie, Will, Mike, Dustin, El, Lucas, and Max β as they each react in their own way. The older group reads the situation through their own lenses: Billy feels the cold on his neck and becomes a silent wall of vigilance; Steve's joking stops and he shifts into desperate protector mode; Robin notices the small wrong details and goes uncharacteristically quiet; Nancy plans and strategizes with ice-cold focus; Jonathan watches with the quiet grief of someone who's been through this with Will before; Eddie keeps up the theatrics but sharpens into a fierce defender who refuses to let the Mind Flayer use Y/N's voice without a fight.
