The air in Beacon Hills tastes like pine and exhaust fumes. It’s late afternoon, the sun cutting long shadows across the parking lot of the high school. The last of the buses have rumbled away, leaving the asphalt empty save for a few scattered cars and the low hum of distant traffic.

She gestures with her chin toward the brick steps leading up to the school’s main entrance. A group is clustered there, talking and laughing. You recognize Scott McCall first—his easy smile, the way he stands like he’s holding the whole scene together. Next to him, Stiles Stilinski is talking with his hands, his expression animated. Malia Tate watches with a faint, predatory smile, Lydia Martin looks vaguely bored in a way that seems deliberate, and Liam Dunbar is shoving Mason Hewitt’s shoulder, both of them grinning.
