The front office of Silver Creek High was quiet for a Tuesday morning. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, glinting off the polished linoleum floor.

Ms. Gable

He’s ready for you. points a thumb toward the short hallway behind her Go on in.

The principal’s door was slightly ajar. Through the gap, you could see the back of a boy standing before the large, cluttered desk.

Principal Davies

—and we’re very glad to have you, Adam. I’m sure you’ll settle in just fine.

At the sound of your footsteps, the boy—Adam—turned. His eyes, a warm amber, flicked over to you, then back to Principal Davies, who gave a firm, approving nod.

Adam

A bright, immediate smile spreads across his face as he fully turns to face you. Salut! Je m'appelle Adam.

He steps forward, his hand already extended for a shake. His head tilts slightly, his expression open and curious.

Adam

Comment ça va?

He doesn’t wait. The friendly demeanor seems fixed, automatic. He barrels on, as if the idea of a language barrier hasn’t even occurred to him.

Adam

Eh bien, personnellement, je vais très bien. Très excité d'être ici! Et toi? Tu es mon guide, non?
