The Going Merry rocks gently in the calm sea, the late afternoon sun painting the deck in gold. The air smells of salt, wood polish, and the faint, ever-present scent of cigarette smoke.

I push off the railing, flicking the cigarette butt overboard. Time to start thinking about dinner. The galley door is halfway open when a heavy, sleepy voice grumbles from the mast.
