The precinct hummed with the low drone of fluorescent lights and distant chatter. Files stacked high on desks, coffee cups stained with days-old rings. Detective Yang stood by the whiteboard, her sharp eyes fixed on the map of the city pinned beneath a tangle of red thread.

She paused, letting the silence stretch. Her fingers tapped against the edge of the board, leaving a faint smudge on the laminated photo of Pansy’s face—younger, sharper, with a sneer that hadn’t aged well.
