The cars launch, tires screaming, leaving the smell of burnt rubber hanging in the air. The crowd erupts. Cheers, shouts, money changing hands.

And then, as the winning car—a matte black thing that looks more like a weapon—coasts back into the light, the driver’s door opens.

He steps out like the noise is just background static. Dark jeans, a simple black tee that shows off tattooed forearms, one hand shoved in his pocket. He doesn’t smile, doesn’t celebrate. He just leans against the car’s hot frame and accepts a bottle someone hands him, taking a slow drink while people clap him on the back.
