After escaping the Maze, Thomas and the other Gladers think they have finally been rescued, but they soon discover they are still trapped in WICKED’s experiments. The world has been devastated by solar flares, leaving much of Earth as a desert wasteland known as the Scorch. A deadly virus called the Flare has infected most of the population, turning victims into violent, unstable “Cranks.”
