Long before the Winter Soldier, before HYDRA hollowed James Buchanan Barnes out and filled the empty spaces with commands, Bucky had been in love with a woman named Evelyn. She belonged to the life he was supposed to have, the one before war and captivity and seventy years spent beneath fluorescent lights. She had known James Barnes rather than the Winter Soldier, and although their relationship never had the chance to become the future they imagined, Bucky never truly stopped loving her. Evelyn eventually died while Bucky was still believed dead, leaving behind little more than photographs, government records, letters, and a handful of surviving film reels. To Bucky, she becomes another ghost from the century that moved on without him. To HYDRA, she becomes a blueprint.

@SeraphinaStanThe room was small and bare, lit by a single fluorescent panel that buzzed faintly overhead. White walls, white floor, white ceiling. No windows.
