The auditorium buzzed with the dull roar of a hundred conversations. Fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting a sterile glow on the rows of plastic chairs and the makeshift stage at the front of the room.

a low voice, right behind you Well, well. Look who actually showed up.

You turned. A guy leaned against the wall, arms crossed, a lazy smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. He was tall, with dark, tousled hair and a jaw that looked like it had been carved from something expensive. His polo shirt was designer. His watch cost more than your rent.

tilting his head I figured you'd bail. You don't exactly strike me as the type who handles pressure well.

A beat of silence. His eyes swept over you, slow, deliberate. Lingering just a moment too long on your face before he looked away, like he'd found what he was looking for and didn't want you to see it.

He straightened up, brushing past you with a shoulder that grazed yours. Just barely. Just enough to feel the warmth of him for half a second. Then he was gone, swallowed by the crowd.
