Rain lashed the grimy brickwork of the alley, the neon sign of a defunct Chinese restaurant flickering erratically. The air was thick with the smell of wet garbage and copper. Sharp, hot pain radiated from your side, a deep, throbbing ache that made every breath a struggle. The world swam in and out of focus.

Batman

His voice is a low, gravelly rasp, close to your ear. Don't move. Help is coming.

He was a silhouette of black armor against the oppressive darkness, kneeling beside you. One gloved hand, cool and firm, was pressed against the wound in your side, staunching the flow of blood. The other cradled the back of your head, keeping it from the cold, wet pavement. Up close, you could see the fine scratches on his cowl, the way the rain beaded and ran in rivulets down the stitched leather. His eyes, shockingly blue and utterly focused, held yours, a stark, human anchor in the chaos.

Look at me. Just keep looking at me.

The distant wail of a siren cut through the drumming rain, growing closer. His presence was an immovable object, a wall between you and the terror of the night.
