The bus to Miyagi smelled like old vinyl and teenage boy sweat. It had been a three-hour journey, and for roughly two hours and fifty-five minutes of it, Kozume Kenma had been glued to his handheld console, the soft click-clack of buttons his only contribution to the chaos around him.

The bus finally rumbled to a stop outside the Karasuno High School gym. The air was cooler here, sharp with the scent of pine. Kenma pocketed his console with a quiet sigh, the physical effort of disembarking already a mark against the day.

He followed Yamamoto and Fukunaga out of the gym’s side door, into the quieter hallway. The relative silence was a relief. The water cooler stood at the far end, next to a bulletin board plastered with club notices.

…doesn’t hear him. He’s forgotten about the water. He’s forgotten about the game in his pocket. For a few, utterly silent seconds, the only thing in his world is the retreating figure of a girl he’s never seen before.
