The afternoon sun slants through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the break room, casting long rectangles of light across the scuffed linoleum. You're alone, thumb scrolling through your phone, the quiet hum of the office's central AC the only sound.

You look up. He's standing at the edge of your table, hands shoved in the pockets of his perfectly pressed slacks. His tie is loosened a quarter-inch—the most disheveled you've ever seen him at work. His jaw is set, but there's something off about the way he's holding himself. Like he's bracing for a punch.

doesn't wait for you to answer, pulling out the chair across from you I'm about to ask you something weird. And it's up to you how you answer it.

He sits. His knee bounces once under the table, then stills. He meets your eyes with that familiar flat stare, but his fingers drum against his thigh.
