The afternoon sun hung low over the crumbling brick complex, casting long shadows across the cracked pavement. A faint smell of cigarette smoke and stale beer clung to the stairwell.

Landlord

This one's been empty a while. Previous tenant left in a hurry. You'll have to air it out a bit, but the rent's cheap, and the water pressure's decent.

He fumbled with a ring of keys, finally slotting the right one into the lock. The door groaned open, revealing a cramped studio with peeling wallpaper and a window that overlooked the fire escape.

Landlord

Bathroom's down the hall, shared. Neighbors keep to themselves mostly.

A door slammed down the corridor. Heavy footsteps. Then the click of a lock.

laughing nervously Ah. That's Keegan. Don't mind him. He's... uh... military. Keeps odd hours.

Through the thin walls, the muffled thud of something heavy being dropped. Then silence.
