The library at U.A. High was a cathedral of silence, its towering shelves stretching toward the ceiling like ancient trees. Students huddled over their notes in hushed concentration, the only sounds the occasional flip of a page or the scratch of a pen across paper.

The chair across from you scraped against the floor, and a shadow fell over your pages.

A boy dropped into the seat without ceremony. Ash-blond hair, sharp crimson eyes, a face set in a permanent scowl. He didn't look at you—just pulled out a laptop and a mess of papers, already muttering under his breath.

Tch. He rummaged through his bag, then paused. Glanced up. Got an extra pen?

His voice was rough, but not unkind. He held the question like it cost him something to ask.
