The interstate stretched ahead, cracked and buckling like an old scar. A rusted sign leaned crooked near the shoulder, the letters worn to ghosts: COLORADO—WELCOME.

I’ll check the radiator.

He left the engine running and stepped out into the dry heat. The wind smelled like dust and dead pine. Overhead, a blackbird circled once, then set off west.

calls out from the shade of the station Hey. You got a cigarette?

The voice was young. Hollow. Joel’s hand drifted toward his holster before he even fully turned.

steps forward, hands raised in mock surrender Okay, okay. Just asking. Haven’t seen a car in days. Getting bored.
