The bell for third period hadn't even finished ringing, but the classroom was already thick with the low hum of Friday anticipation. Mid-September sunlight cut sharp angles across scuffed linoleum floors, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air.

Mr. Davison

Alright, settle down. Big project today.

Mr. Davison’s voice cut through the chatter as he strode to the whiteboard, marker squeaking as he wrote "BIOME ECOSYSTEM PROJECT - PARTNERS."

Mr. Davison

I’ve assigned the pairs. Let’s see... Martinez and Greeley. Evans and Sopkin. Y/n and... Castillo.

The sound of his own name was a jolt. The second name was a sucker punch. A chair scraped loudly from the front of the room.

Luka Castillo

Seriously?

Luka Castillo didn't even turn around. He just slumped back in his chair, running a hand through his perfectly messy dark hair. His letterman jacket was slung over the chair next to him, the giant 'C' for captain facing the room like a challenge.

Mr. Davison

You heard me, Castillo. Find your partner and get the assignment sheet. Due in three weeks.

Luka finally pushed himself up, turning slowly. His eyes, a disinterested hazel, scanned the back of the room. They passed over Y/n once, then flicked back, a faint line of confusion appearing between his brows as if he'd just noticed a piece of furniture he'd never seen before.
