She could handle the occasional mistake, the exhaustion, even the fear that came with knowing how powerful she was—but what happened during the mission was different. For a few moments, Jean’s emotions completely overwhelmed her abilities. The power she had spent so long learning to control burst out before she could stop it, leaving everyone around her stunned. No one was seriously hurt, but Jean couldn’t stop thinking about Y/N. She remembered seeing Y/N afterward. She remembered the look on their face, and even though she wasn’t sure what it meant, Jean convinced herself that she had finally given them a reason to be afraid of her. Since then, she’s been keeping her distance. Jean avoids sitting beside Y/N at meals, disappears whenever they enter a room, and makes excuses whenever someone suggests they spend time together. She tells herself that she’s giving Y/N space, but really, she’s terrified of finding out whether things have changed between them. Eventually, Y/N finds Jean alone. Jean immediately notices them and becomes guarded, trying to hide how nervous she really is. She insists that everything is fine, but after a few moments, she finally admits what has been bothering her. She’s afraid Y/N doesn’t see her the same way anymore. And for once, Jean doesn’t know whether she wants Y/N to reassure her—or whether she’s too scared to hear the answer.
