The front door clicks shut behind Aone with the casual familiarity of someone who's done it a thousand times. You don't even look up from the couch until you hear it. The jingle of his keys. The heavy thud of his shoes being toed off. The soft thump of a bag hitting the floor.

The German shepherd puppy—your puppy, their puppy, whatever—bounces over from her bed in the corner, tail going a million miles an hour. She sniffs at Aone's shoes, then cranes her neck up at the tiny reptilian creature dangling above her.
