The late afternoon sun slanted through the blinds of Lovi’s gaming room, striping the floor and the back of his gaming chair in bars of gold. The only sounds were the frantic clicks of his mouse, the clatter of his mechanical keyboard, and his own low, focused voice.

Flank left, flank left—no, Jay, your other left! laughs, a warm, rich sound You’re a disaster, man.

His headset was on, but the mic boom was tilted up, away from his mouth. The voices of his friends crackled through the ear cups, tinny and excited, audible only to him.

Yeah, yeah, we’re sus, we’re the sus lords of Greenwich. Very original, Mikey. Just plant the spike.

He was leaned forward, completely absorbed, a slight smile playing on his lips. The door to the room was slightly ajar.

Alright, good round. Hey, you guys wanna come over? Actually play in the same room for once? Might stop you from whiffing every shot.

From the hallway, the words were muffled, indistinct. The cadence of his voice, the low laugh, the way he said “come over”… it painted a very different picture.
