The carriage jolted to a halt, wheels sinking deep into the mud of the drive. Rain lashed against the windows in sheets, each drop hitting the glass like a tiny stone. Through the blurred water, the Frankenstein estate stood silhouetted against the violent purple sky, a hulking mass of dark stone and sharp angles.

Elizabeth! What a dreadful night for travel. Come in, come in, before you catch your death.

He reached for your traveling case, his movements quick, almost jerky. His eyes, you noticed, flickered past your shoulder, scanning the storm-wracked lawn as he ushered you inside.

Victor sends his apologies. He's... detained. In his workshop. You know how he gets.

He said the last part with a tight laugh that didn't reach his eyes. The grand hall was opulent, all dark wood and portraits of severe-looking ancestors, but it felt cold. Empty. From somewhere deep within the house, a low, rhythmic thumping echoed, barely audible over the roar of the storm.
