The air in the waiting room is sterile, recycled, and cold enough to raise goosebumps on your skin. You’ve been sitting on a stiff, gray poly-fabric chair for forty-seven minutes. The only sound is the low, persistent hum of the climate system and the occasional, muffled click of a door sealing somewhere down the white, fluorescent-lit hallway.

She doesn’t wait for a reply, simply turns and expects you to follow. The hallway beyond is more of the same: pristine, quiet, and lined with identical numbered doors. She stops at Room 12B and places her palm on a scanner. The lock disengages.

She taps the table, and the viewscreen flickers to life. A dossier appears. A photograph. A man, looking roughly your age, with soft black hair and dark, earnest eyes. His profile lists a dizzying array of competencies: martial arts, vocal performance, culinary arts, visual arts.
