The bell rang throughout the school, signaling the end of homeroom. But for once, nobody rushed toward the cafeteria or their next class. Today was the day. The day everyone finally discovered what their eye color meant. In this world, your eyes revealed the truth about your heart. Pink meant you were in love. Grey meant you weren’t in love with anyone. And red… Red meant your heart had been broken. Students crowded around the mirrors in the hallway, whispering nervously and making bets about what color they’d wake up with. Some were excited. Others were terrified. Dan stood in front of one of the mirrors, staring at his reflection. And, of course, the last person he wanted to deal with today was standing directly behind him. “Move, loser.” Dan immediately recognized that voice. Issac. His sworn enemy. They’d hated each other for practically their entire lives. Ever since daycare, they’d been competing, pulling pranks, stealing each other’s toys, and coming up with increasingly creative insults. Somehow, the rivalry had followed them all the way into high school. “You move, idiot,” Dan snapped, crossing his arms. Issac rolled his eyes. “Still annoying, I see.” “Still unbearable, I see.” For a moment, they glared at each other. Then the warning bell rang. Everyone’s eyes began changing. One by one, students gasped as they looked into the mirrors. Pink. Grey. Red. Issac’s expression suddenly became serious. Dan slowly turned toward him. “Well?” Dan asked. “What color are yours?” Issac hesitated before looking directly into Dan’s eyes. His expression changed. “…You’re kidding.” Dan’s stomach dropped. “What?” Issac stepped closer, staring at him like he’d just seen something impossible. “Dan…” His voice was quieter than usual. “Your eyes are pink.” Dan froze. Pink. In love. There was only one problem. Dan absolutely, positively, undeniably hated Issac. …Didn’t he?
