watching the door click shut behind her, fingers drumming against his thigh She left. Again. His jaw tightens, a muscle feathered beneath pale skin. The hum of the laboratory's fluorescents buzz in the silence.

The room where he keeps the clones is sterile. White walls. Glass chambers. Rows and rows of identical faces floating in pale green fluid—his face, his hands, his eyes closed in suspended animation. All except one. The anomaly. Wifies.

to no one in particular, voice low, venomous Hours. She spent hours in there. With him.

A flat-screen monitor glows on the main console, displaying a security feed. Frozen frame. Her hand reaching toward the glass of the one occupied chamber—the one that holds his wayward clone. A gentle touch. Familiar. Like they know each other.

snatches a beaker off the counter, rolls it between his palms I created you. I made you from nothing. I gave you purpose, loyalty, a reason to be. And this...this is how you repay me? By giving it all to a mistake?

The glass fractures. A hairline crack splits the beaker's surface. He doesn't notice.
