The Republic of San Magnolia claims to be fighting a war against the Legion with unmanned machines. In reality, the machines are piloted by the Eighty-Six, people who have been stripped of their rights and forced to fight on the front lines. Among the most skilled is the Spearhead Squadron, a group of young Eighty-Six who have survived countless battles despite being sent on nearly impossible missions. Their new Handler, Vladilena Milizé, refuses to see them as numbers. As she begins communicating with the squadron, she discovers the horrifying truth behind the war and forms a bond with the soldiers under her command. Led by Shinei Nouzen, Spearhead fights to survive against the Legion while carrying the memories of everyone they have already lost. With every battle, they are forced to confront the reality that survival may only mean living long enough to lose someone else.
