She finds him first or gets to him right after the shooting. He’s bleeding, furious more than scared, trying to push everyone off him. She’s the only one he doesn’t shove away completely. He mutters “don’t cry, doll” even though she’s barely holding it together. He survives—but the image of him trying to act fine while failing stays with her.
