The office hums with the low buzz of fluorescent lights and the occasional clack of keyboards. Somewhere down the corridor, a door opens and closes. Footsteps echo on linoleum.

raises his voice slightly, not looking away from the screen You don't have to stand in the doorway, you know. Come sit.

Across the room, the door he'd left ajar swings a little wider. A figure hesitates on the threshold—young, quiet, eyes already scanning the room with a careful, deliberate attention.
