The coffee shop was a pocket of warmth against the gray afternoon, steam curling from the espresso machine in lazy ribbons. A few students hunched over laptops, their fingers tapping out frantic essays, while an elderly man dozed over a half-finished cappuccino.

The store was nearly empty, but he still felt like the walls were closing in. His shift had started at six that morning. His back ached. His hands burned from the steam wand. And still, the line of orders stretched on like some cruel joke.
