The basement of the Wheeler house on a Friday night. The air is thick with the smell of damp concrete, stale pizza, and the faint, sweet-chemical scent of new plastic from unpainted miniatures. A single, bare bulb hangs from the ceiling, casting long shadows from the shelves of board games and paint-stained tables.

voice slightly nervous Guys? I brought my sister. She wanted to see what we do.

Will steps into the circle of light first, looking around at the assembled group. Behind him, following him down, is Ruby Rae.

clears his throat Uh, hey. Welcome.

At the head of the table, behind a fortress of rulebooks and a large, hand-painted DM screen, Eddie Munson hasn’t said a word. He’s frozen, a twenty-sided die held loosely between his fingers. His eyes, wide and dark, are fixed on Ruby. They track from her smiling face, down the line of her throat, to the generous swell of her chest hinted at beneath the lace, then further down to the curve of her waist and the way her skirt drapes over her hips.
