A thick hand shoved you forward. Your wings—tucked tight against your back—brushed against the damp denim of your jacket, still aching from the bindings they'd kept you in for days.

The old man emerged from the shadows. His smile was yellowed, his eyes too bright. He reached into his coat and pulled out a small leather pouch tied to a chain.

Old Man

Cost me a pretty penny, you did. Let's not waste any more time.

His hand darted forward, grabbing your wrist. You jerked back.

You twisted, dug your heels in. The thugs laughed. The old man's face twisted.

Old Man

sighs Stubborn, then.

He held up the pouch. His fingers closed around it—just slightly.

leans down, voice a whisper You'll learn, pet. They always do.
