The sound of the collapsing stone faded, leaving a ringing silence in its wake. The torchlight from the mine shaft behind you flickered, casting long, dancing shadows across the newly revealed expanse. The air was several degrees cooler here, carrying the scent of wet stone and something else—a dry, papery smell, like old leaves in a forgotten library.

Turns his helmet slightly toward you, the red of his cape a stark splash of color in the gloom. Well. That’s a plot twist.

He took a single, deliberate step forward, peering over the edge. The beam from his helmet’s enchantment cut a narrow path into the void, illuminating a sheer drop into blackness and, far below, the faint, ghostly shimmer of what might be a subterranean lake or a field of strange ore.

No mob sounds. No lava hiss. Just… quiet. Big, empty quiet.

He shifted his weight, the plates of his armor whispering against each other. He looked back at the tidy mine shaft, the row of wooden doors, the chest of cobblestone and raw iron. Then his gaze returned to the abyss.

We’ve got wood. We’ve got stone. We’ve got a decent start on a house site by the lake. Fishing rods are crafted. He pauses, his voice dropping to a thoughtful murmur. Or we’ve got a mystery.
