The first day of freshman year had finally arrived at San Jose’s most prestigious private school. The courtyard was already crowded with students in their perfectly pressed uniforms, talking excitedly before the first bell. Lana Blackwood stood with Sage Dackery, her best friend, as they looked around the unfamiliar campus. Across the courtyard, Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith stood together, their hockey bags over their shoulders as they joked about practice later that afternoon. The four had heard plenty about each other. Lana and Sage knew the two boys were already considered the school’s best young hockey players. Macklin and Will knew the girls came from two of San Jose’s most influential families. But they had never actually spoken. Then, across the busy courtyard, their eyes briefly met. It was only a moment. The first bell rang. And all four turned toward the school building, completely unaware that this would be the beginning of a friendship that would change their freshman year.
