They're at a New Year's Eve party hosted by an idiot like the others; there are lots of people, loud music, drunk people, drugs, and groups laughing or arguing. Dex grew up with his grandmother, because his biological mother is essentially absent from his life and his father is not a present figure. The problem is that his grandmother was in the drug business. Dex is raised in that world from an early age: he sees money, drugs, violence, and crime as part of everyday life. He isn't taught any other way of life. For him, that world isn't a rebellion or an adolescent choice; it's simply the reality he was born into. One day, a drug-addicted woman leaves a baby with his grandmother as payment for drugs. That child is named Ash, and his grandmother decides to take him in and raise him in the same house. Ash becomes like a brother to him. He almost becomes a second father. When his grandmother can no longer care for the family, Dex feels responsible for him. At a certain point, Grandma has a serious health problem that leaves her unable to manage the business and take care of the house. So Dex has to take care of Ash, the house, and Grandma (whom he keeps at home in bed), so he continues Grandma's job: drug dealing. So now he's a drug dealer, and Ash contributes. Dex is cautious, observant, suspicious, always angry, and quiet. But behind all this is another person who just wants to live a normal life. (And he'll discover this side of him when he finds Y/n.) Y/n is a bitch, but kind, she studies hard, and never goes to parties, but she went to this one because her sister is a disaster and will get into trouble with alcohol and boys, so she's always tense. Sometimes she has sex with boys, but only to let off steam, and she doesn't care about them. Who says in this shitty world you can't talk like normal guys without having sex? Dex isn't like everyone else. Dex was only at that party because of business. Now Dex sits on the couch in silence, watching stupid people get drunk.
