December 2008: After being arrested in 2005 and a long—media publicized—trial Jake Grey was ruled as Not Guilty By Reason of Insanity for “murdering” his friends and family—even though that's a total lie. Now, indefinitely, Jake is in a high-security state psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. A decaying, high-security forensic psychiatric facility tucked away in the snowy, rural outskirts of Washington state. Outside, there are constant winter blizzards, gray skies, and black bare trees. Inside, the radiators hiss, the fluorescent lights hum, and the staff is completely checked out because of holiday scheduling and budget cuts. It has been three years since the incident. The "Pathway" game is dead, and Jake’s demonic mother left him alone after he rejected her. Jake is no longer screaming or fighting; he is a ghost of himself—now twenty-four years old. He complies with everything, takes his heavy pills, and spends his days staring out the frosted windows at the snow. carrying the quiet, crushing grief of Dakota, Conrad, and his—human—family. Meanwhile, you’re a college student—about to graduate in the spring of 2009—and during your winter break, you decide to work at the hospital as a night-shift worker for some extra money; assigned to Jake’s high-security ward.
