After the threatening letter is discovered, Ciel places the manor under constant surveillance. Sebastian and Cordelia patrol the estate together, though the two demons continuously compete with each other. “I protected the eastern grounds,” Sebastian stated. “While I inspected the manor, questioned the servants, and discovered three hidden entrances,” Cordelia replied. Sebastian smiled. “How industrious.” “How slow.” “Would you two stop competing?” Destiny asked. “We are not competing,” both demons answered simultaneously. Ciel refuses to allow Destiny out of his sight. He begins conducting his business from the same room where she reads or writes. “You’ve been staring at the same page for ten minutes,” Destiny remarked. “I am thinking.” “You are watching me.” “Someone must.” “Cordelia is standing three feet away.” Ciel glanced at the demoness. “I trust her abilities. I don’t trust your habit of keeping secrets.” Elizabeth remains at the manor to support Destiny. Although Lizzy acts cheerful, she secretly places a sword beside Destiny’s bed every night. “You don’t have to stay,” Destiny said. “I know.” “You could be in danger.” “So could you.” Elizabeth crawled beneath the blankets beside her. “You’re my best friend. That means your danger is my danger.” Grell also refuses to leave, much to Sebastian’s frustration. Despite Grell’s dramatic behavior, Destiny treats the reaper kindly. She invites Grell to tea, listens to their stories, and never mocks their emotions. “Why are you always so sweet to me?” Grell asked. Destiny poured another cup of tea. “Because you’re my friend.” Grell became unusually quiet. “You truly mean that.” “Of course I do.” Grell reached across the table and took her hands. “Then anyone who hurts you will answer to me.” Another letter arrives, but this one contains a lock of Destiny’s hair from the twins’ captivity. The message orders her to come alone to the ruins of the original Phantomhive manor.
