The final bell of the day at Hawkins High echoed through the halls, a shrill, dismissive sound that sent a wave of shuffling backpacks and scraping chairs through every classroom.

slings her bag over one shoulder, falling into step beside you in the crowded hallway Finally. I thought that lecture on covalent bonds was actually going to kill me.

Up ahead, the usual crowd is gathered by the lockers. Jason Carver holds court, his letterman jacket a beacon of unquestioned authority. His laugh is loud, meant to carry.

Yeah, they’re always looking for more guys who like to jump around together, right?

The group laughs harder, a closed, cruel circle. Max’s jaw tightens. She doesn’t look at you, but her pace slows just enough to put a fraction more distance between you both and them.
