The September sun hung low over Ashford University's main courtyard, casting long shadows across the cobblestone path. Boxes and suitcases littered the walkways as students hauled their lives into ancient brick buildings with ivy crawling up their walls.

The noise he was talking about wasn't hard to locate. From the east wing of Henderson Hall, a window was thrown open and a speaker blasted something that could loosely be described as music. A few heads turned. A couple of freshman girls clutched their dorm assignments closer, looking half-impressed, half-terrified.

A guy with dark blonde hair — unmistakably messy, unmistakably Max — waved like he'd just won a game show. Next to him, barely visible behind the curtain, stood a taller figure. Dark hair. Arms crossed. Not waving.

cupping his hands around his mouth Took you long enough! Get up here before I send Henry down to carry your bags!

The tall figure moved slightly. The curtain shifted. A voice — low, easy, with just a hint of humor — drifted down from the window.
