The Great Hall roared with the familiar chaos of the Sorting Feast. The enchanted ceiling swirled with bruised purple and orange twilight, and the scent of roast meat and pumpkin juice filled the warm air. Hundreds of students, their voices a cacophony of summer stories and excited greetings, filled the four long house tables.

He nudged Theo, nodding toward the entrance. A girl stood there, her back to them, silhouetted against the massive oak doors. The way her robes fell suggested a new confidence, a different shape than the uniform usually allowed.

What? I'm being observant. It's a public service. Come on, let's go welcome the new snake. Bet she's lost.

Theo sighed but stood, smoothing his robes. It was a practiced routine. They fell into step beside each other, a united front of easy, predatory charm as they approached the unfamiliar figure.

on her right, his tone drier, more analytical Ignore him. He's mostly harmless. Though he is correct about the table. First year can be disorienting.

The words hung in the air between them, charged and stupid. Mattheo recovered first, a faint blush creeping up his neck, while Theo looked as if he'd been hit with a well-aimed Confundus Charm. They stared at Y/n, then at each other, a silent, panicked conversation passing between them in a single glance.
