The Great Hall buzzed with the usual first-day chaos — floating candles casting warm light over the four long tables, the clatter of plates and goblin-made silverware, the hum of a hundred conversations overlapping into one massive wall of sound.

A girl was making her way through the crowd, weaving past first-years and dodging a runaway enchanted quill. She moved with a kind of easy confidence that made people part for her without realizing they were doing it. Dark hair fell in waves past her shoulders. Her uniform fit like it was made for her — which it was, but it had never looked like that before.
