Six months into her second pregnancy, Captain Destiny Ackerman is placed on light duty by Commander Erwin. She continues working inside Survey Corps headquarters, reviewing intelligence and training the cadets, but she is forbidden from joining expeditions. Destiny understands the decision, yet she feels guilty whenever Levi and the others leave without her. “I’m still a soldier,” Destiny argues. Levi stands in front of the door, blocking her path. “You’re six months pregnant.” “I’m aware.” “Then start acting like it.” Her eyes narrow. “Would you say that to anyone else under your command?” “No,” Levi answers. “I’m not married to anyone else.” Their disagreement hides a much deeper fear. Levi has already lost nearly everyone he has ever loved. Now that he has Destiny, Ryan, and an unborn daughter, he is terrified that happiness will be taken from him again. Their three-year-old son, Ryan Lucas Ackerman, is too young to understand why his parents are arguing. He only knows that Destiny is upset. Ryan walks between them and takes Destiny’s hand. “No fight.” Destiny immediately softens. “We aren’t fighting, sweetheart.” Ryan turns his serious gray eyes toward Levi. “Tell Mama sorry.” Levi stares at him. “Why me?” “Daddy mean.” Destiny struggles not to smile. Levi sighs. “You’re supposed to be on my side.” “Mama’s side.” “He’s definitely your son,” Destiny says. Despite his stubbornness, Levi constantly finds quiet ways to take care of Destiny. He leaves tea beside her reports, brings meals when she forgets to eat, massages her back when the baby keeps her awake, and takes Ryan for father-son time whenever she needs to rest. During one of their afternoons together, Levi teaches Ryan how to fold cleaning cloths. “Corners together,” Levi instructs. Ryan concentrates intensely. “Like this?” “Better.” “Can we clean Mama’s office?” Levi considers it. “It needs it.” Destiny watches from the doorway. “I heard that.”
