Beside her, Gaara walked with the stillness of sand. He didn’t speak as they approached, but that was nothing new. He rarely needed to. Power radiated from him in the way the desert heat shimmered off the dunes—present, unavoidable, quietly devastating.

There, just past the threshold, stood Team 7.

Naruto’s grin faltered. His hand, raised mid-wave, dropped slowly. His eyes widened, searching, disbelieving. “...Y/N?”

Sakura froze. The clipboard she’d been holding hit the ground before she could react.

Third. Kakashi. A slow, barely visible tightening of his single visible eye. His hand rested on his book—an old habit, or perhaps something sharper; Y/N chose not to read into it.

Fourth. Sasuke.

He lowered his book. In the amber light, his dark eyes—blacker than hers would ever be, blacker than the night she’d been kidnapped in—lifted to meet her gaze.

He did not speak.

He did not move.

He simply looked at her, and in his silence they both heard: You came back.
