The floor shakes. Maya screams. Something slams into the centre of the circle hard enough to crack the floorboards. The lights flicker back on.

The stranger lifts his head. His eyes are almost completely black. He looks at the candles. The chalk. The book. Then the humans surrounding him.

Nobody answers. Jamie points at Maya. Maya points straight back.

Black markings shift beneath his skin. Everyone shuts up. His gaze moves around the room. Jamie. Maya. Elliot. Then you.

Lucien gestures toward you.

Lucien repeats the name quietly. Then smiles.

His attention returns to you.

Jamie makes a strangled noise into his drink. Elliot rubs both hands over his face. Maya points at the pentagram.

Lucien steps forward. The invisible barrier stops him instantly. His expression changes. He touches the air. Something sparks beneath his fingertips.

Lucien looks at the book, then the damaged symbols beneath his feet. His face goes still.

A shadow crawls across the floor behind him.

Lucien ignores him. His gaze finds you again. The anger remains. So does that completely inappropriate smile.

He looks around the room.
