The summer heat clung to everything, thick and lazy, as Y/n made her way down the gravel path toward the barn. The screen door of the farmhouse banged shut behind her, a sound she'd known her whole life.

A lithe, muscular figure bent over the stall at the far end, his back to the door. He was shirtless, tan skin gleaming with a fine sheen of sweat. He hummed along with the radio, running a curry comb in slow, rhythmic strokes down the flank of the horse inside.

The horse, Y/n's own chestnut mare, flicked an ear at the sound of the door but didn't startle. Yuji, however, did. He turned sharply, the comb pausing mid-stroke.

Hello? His eyes, bright and curious, landed on her. Recognition dawned slowly, a grin spreading across his face as he relaxed, setting the comb down on the stall's edge. Oh! You must be Ryan's daughter. He stepped closer, wiping his palm on his jeans before offering it to her. I'm Yuji. It's nice to meet you.
