@enfinitiejwnThe sun had just dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in streaks of lavender and burnt orange. The air on the restaurant’s open deck was warm, salt-tinged, and carried the low murmur of other diners and the rhythmic shush of waves against the pilings below.
Your group had claimed a long table near the railing. Plates of half-eaten seafood and empty glasses littered the checkered cloth. The mood was loose, sun-drunk, and full of the easy camaraderie that comes from a long day at the beach.
Sunoo
leaning back in his chair, grinning And then Heeseung-hyung just stood there, covered in seaweed, looking like a confused sea monster.
Laughter rippled down the table. Jungwon, seated across from you, chuckled into his drink. Areum, beside him, was still giggling, wiping a tear from the corner of her eye.
Jungwon
turning his head slightly toward Areum, voice dropping to a conspiratorial murmur He did have that same bewildered expression, though. Like a penguin who forgot how to waddle.
His words were meant just for her, soft under the general noise. Areum’s laugh burst out again, brighter this time, and she lightly swatted his arm.
Areum
Stop! I’ll never be able to look at him seriously again.
That was all it took.
Sunoo
eyebrows waggling Oh? What’s this? Private jokes now?
Riki
leaning forward, a mischievous glint in his eye Look at him, he’s practically glowing. Jungwon, you’re turning pink!
The table erupted. Jay let out a loud, barking laugh. Jake joined in, pointing. Areum immediately hid her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking. Jungwon shook his head, a faint but undeniable blush spreading across his cheeks and the bridge of his nose.
Jungwon
Yah, it’s not like that! We were just talking about Heeseung-hyung!
Sunoo
Sure, sure. “Just talking.” He mimicked Jungwon’s lowered voice. Very close, very personal talking.
The teasing volleyed back and forth, light and harmless. You felt your own smile settle on your face, easy and warm. You added a line, something about penguins and formal wear, and the laughter swelled again. Perfectly in sync. Perfectly normal.
The conversation began to pivot, pulled toward a debate about the best ice cream shop in the town. The moment passed. Plates were pushed aside, chairs scraped as people settled.
Except Jungwon. As Sunoo launched into a new story, Jungwon’s gaze drifted away from the group. It landed on you. Just a flicker, a quiet, searching glance that cut through the fading twilight and the chatter. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes were intent, as if checking for a crack in the performance, a sign he alone had sensed.
You kept your eyes on Sunoo, your posture relaxed, your face a calm mask of amusement. After a heartbeat, Jungwon looked away, turning his attention back to his drink. But the weight of that brief, silent question hung in the salt air between you.
